Long time no see
WOW, it's been 2 months since I've updated this. Shit...
Anyway, I won't bother backtracking. I'll just pick up with yesterday...
Bench press 5x5 @75. I used 80lbs for the last set.
Bench is weird for me. Some days it feels super heavy and other days not so much. But, I did get a compliment on my form. My bench form used to suck ass so that's a BIG deal to me!
Then, I took my client outside and together we took turns doing sprints pulling the sled. I only put 20lbs on but it definitely got hard after a few...We also did lunges and push ups between the sprints.
I've lost strength in a few areas, after slacking off for a few weeks....but, it's all good. I'm back at it!

Snatch work, metcon
Spent some time working on the snatch. Finally gave in and used a hook grip. Wasn't as weird as I thought.
I've neglected all the Olympic lifts for a while. My gym owner is really good at them, I'd be crazy not to tap into that resource.

Damn, my back is STILL sore from Wednesdays pulling. Geeez...
So, I'm starting 5x5 for my squats and push press. Today was squats.

Wow, I thought that would be too light. It wasn't.
Then, for something new I put 195lbs on the bar. Squatted it about 1/4 and held it for about a 5 count and came up. Just to get more used to heavy weight on my back. I did about 6 of those.

Max DL day at GORILLA PIT!!!!
So...I thought it would be fun to go check out http://www.gorilla-pit.com/. I headed out at 7am for the 5 hr drive. It's an awesome gym. Lots of good equipment and no bullshit you don't need. Good loud and hard music(a must in my book) plus there's a Chipoltle's next door where you can(and I did)get a nice bowl of meat.
Let me say that it was retarded hot. Ty (owner of the Pit) was sweating just watching me. Hehehe

Every time someone asks me for help or argues with me about my lifestyle I think this..

I find it funny that an overweight, out of shape person would argue with me about diet or exercise.

I worked on these a lot before 5/3/1. I tried FOREVER to hit 100lbs and I finally did around January. Then I just blew them off. I think I did them in a metcon 3 or 4 times but at a lighter weight.

190..1st try I started to lean forward and my spotter pulled me back a wee bit so I consider that a fail

O course I am happy, happy, happy about this.
Couple of thoughts about this...As much as I love 5/3/1 and clearly it's worked very well...I think I need to try something different. My body seems to be getting good at lifting lower weights for reps but not necessarily getting good at heavier weights. The best way to describe it is this: when I put the 200 on my back my body said, "what the fuck is this????" Like it needs to get used to the feel of heavier stuff. Agree or not that's my theory.
After that I just did some KB goblet squats with the 45lb

My bench sucks. Really. Last week I sucked balls. My last set was 85 for max and I only got 3.
This week was supposed to be 90 for max reps. But, I decided to keep it at 85.

But I learned a few new things to help my hamstrings improve
The best was the 1 legged straight legged DL with a KB for counter balance. (or that's the best description I can come up with)
I realize how bad I am on my right side because of my surgery. I notice this when I do lunges as well. Anything that requires 1 leg really emphasizes my weakness on that side. Anyway, I really felt it in my hams. I've been reading a lot lately about being quad dominant(I certainly am)and learning how to use your glutes and hams more.

Metcon
A dreaded 'metcon only' day...
My hamstrings were still a bit sore from the good mornings. Especially the right one.

Oh boy, I couldn't do the jumps. My hamstrings just wouldn't cooperate. So, I just did the swings and pull ups.
The 45kb really is getting easier!
After I rested for a few I did a few minutes of jump rope. THEN I did some box jumps so I didn't feel like a complete failure :)

Ok, I rested yesterday because I still felt really sore. The heavy deads, farmers walks, GHD sit ups and pull ups wore my ass out. Hmmm, go figure...
So, I'm trying to do things a bit differently now. No metcons on lifting days. I was driving myself into the ground. My job is not crazy hard but I am on my feet all goddamn day. I feel like I am in a constant state of exhaustion. And I was starting to lose strength at the gym.
I feel like I'm at a turning point with my training. I already feel like my conditioning is shit. I know it is. And as much as I'd rather lift all day long and say "fuck the metcons", I can't. Who cares if I can squat 200lbs if I'm winded climbing a flight of stairs? I have to find a happy medium....

Another shitty performance. Yea, yeah, I know all about ONE bad day at the gym. No big deal, move on....But, I'm seeing a pattern here with myself. I need to figure out why. I AM eating enough. Sure, I have lower cal days but I make up for it, believe me.
Conditioning too much? NO. I only do short metcons. In the last month I have done 1 metcon over 12 minutes.
I am easily the least conditioned person at my gym. I wouldn't mind much if I was insanely strong but I'm not.
So, I'm mediocre strong and my conditioning is shit. Fantastic.

So, I've switched to bench press from floor press after 2 cycles. I'm just using the weight from my floor press.
The bench seems a little bit harder to me.

FGB=FYM
I'm not going to lie, this was horrible. So horrible you may not want to read it....
I hate FGB. I've only done it twice before but I remember it well.
So, I decided to be a trooper and join the group today.
Well, my legs were fucking dead from yesterday's hill sprints. But, I still didn't think it would be THAT bad.
It was.
SDHP...I never do those. I think they're gay. And that is all.
Box jumps...first set was good. After I got tired they were a joke with my right leg. ARRRGGHHHHH

My first mistake was thinking the weight sounded too easy.

Wow, that felt way harder than I thought it would OR should. And my knees were coming in on the last few.

I actually was going to do the thrusters with 65lbs but it was suggested I check my ego and focus on form. Eric DeWitt, I love you...

PC's maybe not a good lift for 5/3/1
Well, I had decided to trade out bench press for PC's....because...
A. We don't have a bench at our gym
B. I really like O-lifting
C. Refer to B.
This is how it went
Power cleans

65x5
75xmax reps. I got 32. What? Yes, 32. I didn't even fail, I just quit. My back was pretty tight and I started to think perhaps this was not such a great plan. Not exactly how it's supposed to go. Well, I've got some thinking to do on that one....
Then Tabata rows.
I did the whole cycle twice.
Not really fun.
Then...I just felt like I wanted to do a little bit more(yeah, I don't know why)
So I thought 2 minutes of max KBS would be fun. You know, not too bad. It's only 2 minutes, after all.
I got 54. Oh shit that sucked. Like really sucked.
I managed 40 or so without stopping. Then I pretty much saw a bright light and I wanted to go to it....
And I'm an Atheist! haha
Really, it was a good day :)

5/3/1/ DL and metcon
I really love this program.
So, today started off as a horrible day but slowly got better :)
Deadlifts

165x max, I got 10
Whew! I wish I could say it was easy but those last few were HARD!
Metcon
10 min AMRAP
5 Front squats@75lbs
10 pull ups
got 6 rounds + front squats
The issue here was the pull ups. The FS felt pretty easy at that weight. The pull ups got real S-L-O-W at the end.
Then I did max GH sit ups in 2 minutes. I got 42. Less than last time. But some weirdness is going on where my feet keep wanting to slide out. Hmmmm

Metcon only
Day 2 of 5/3/1/ and just a metcon today. I had a workout planned but when I got to the gym I decided to workout with the guys.
A rare occurrence indeed.

10 pull ups
10 push ups
10 HANG cleans
10 ring dips
Oh fuck me sideways.
Well, well, well....I got my ass handed to me by those hang cleans. I never do those anymore. It's always power cleans. My 1RM power clean is 100 lbs.
I loaded the bar with 75lbs and had to pull 5 lbs off halfway into the second round.
Jesus. It didn't help that I was in an utterly awful mood, but still....
My time was like 12:11 I think. Horrible to be sure.
Whatever, tomorrow is another day, a rest day...
I'm spending the day in Chicago, eating yummy food and enjoying good company :)

Start of 5/3/1
So, I've taken a hiatus from blogging because my workouts have not been worth writing about. I was having some issues that I thought might be stemming from my surgery so I backed off heavy lifting until I saw the Dr.
Anyway, I got back to it today and also started the 5/3/1 program....pretty excited about this. I'm hoping to add 100lbs to my back squat this year.

Hmmm, potentially I could have gone heavier on the OHS but I'm a bit out of practice. And seeing as I only got 7 rnds maybe it was the right weight to use.
Surprisingly, it was the KBS that got damn heavy towards the end!
All in all it was a good day and did wonders for my mood to be back at the gym :D
Anyway, I got back to it today and also started the 5/3/1 program....pretty excited about this. I'm hoping to add 100lbs to my back squat this year.

I'm not really sure what my old 1RM was. The most I've done is 85 for 3 and the other day I failed at 90.
I'm totally happy with this.

Only an increase of 5 lbs but I did get a couple of good tips on my form. Hopefully, with the 5/3/1 program it will go up a lot more. I'd love to have a 2xbodyweight by the end of the year.
Then, Nikki and I did some farmers walks and prowler pushing.
I love that shit. I wish we had a sled at my gym :(

EPIC DAY
Today was going to be Elizabeth
Which was actually ridiculous and clearly a programming fuck up on my part.
Thursday I did 84 cleans, Friday was power cleans 2,2,1,1,1 and now Elizabeth??
Well, I figured I'd give it a shot. Last time I did it with 65lbs and did jumping ring dips. I was planning on trying the band for dips because jumping was too easy. I hadn't yet decided if I was going to add weight.
Until I walked in and saw a women, an older woman, doing Grace with 85 lbs??!!!
What the shit?
My MAX power clean is 90lbs. So, I did at least tell her I was in awe....and proceeded to load up my pathetic bar with 70 lbs.
All the while wondering. "what the fuck is wrong with me, why is my PC so low??"
So, I start the metcon. It's going good. I like using the band for the dips, way harder.
Anyway, I'm somewhere in the middle of the 15 portion of the cleans when Jay(the owner) says something about my form. I looked at him and he's like, "I don't wanna interrupt your workout..." well, I just dropped the weight and said fuck the workout. I'd rather get my form fixed.
So...he took me back to square one. He had me do a few at a manageable weight and saw a few problems. Probably the biggest was that I was bending my elbows to soon. Really, just muscling the bar up instead of really exploding my hips open. Of course, one of the other problems was not getting under the fucking bar. He watched me fail once. He's like, "Amy! You have no problem with the weight, the bar was like chest high and you just gave up." "Stop thinking about it so much! It's about 2 seconds of discomfort, that's all. Nothing bad is going to happen. Now put some more chalk on your hands and get angry! You can't lift heavy with a smile on your face!" Really, one of the best things I got out of this was thinking of it in terms of 'it's not about getting the bar really high, it's about being able to get low enough to catch it.'
Anyway, we worked on it for a while. Him adding the weight for me. On the last rep I failed once. Got a talking to and tried again. In my mind I was fucking determined to nail this. I didn't care if I only lifted it 3 feet off the ground and had to lay down to catch it, I was fucking getting this.
And I did.
I also thought it was 95lbs until he pulled off the weights and showed me I had in fact just nailed 100lbs. Now if you know me at all, you'll know I have been wanting this so bad I could taste it.
Damn if I didn't squeal like a little girl. I wish I had video because I'm sure I was glowing...
You know what is great about a moment like this? It's not about love or money or work or anything like that. It's not something anybody can do for you. I feel lucky that I have something like this in my life. A passion that brings me so much joy. There are no shortcuts, no easy way. Hard fucking work got me here.Nobody can take that from me.

It wasn't insanely hard but I think I wasted a lot of time hunched over the bar...that moment where you're trying to decide if you have the strength to do another rep...

And...I am feeling all of this today.
